He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

Mayweather: I hear Marquez got cheated

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

MANILA, Philippines - Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. congratulated both Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez for their trilogy bout last November 12 in Las Vegas, but admitted hearing reports that Marquez was cheated.

“I was at the club. I had a party in Virginia. I got some text messages and some e-mails about the fight though,” Mayweather said in an interview with FightHype.

“I didn’t watch the fight, but from what I’m hearing, Marquez got cheated,” he added.

Pacquiao salvaged the victory with a controversial majority decision win over Marquez, but the Mexican boxer said afterward that he knew he was robbed of the win.

Mayweather congratulated both boxers for putting on a third fight, but questioned why it was necessary in the first place.

Mayweather, who fought Marquez in 12 uncompetitive rounds in 2009, did not comment on Pacquiao’s performance after the Filipino boxer filed a defamation of character case against him. He said, however, that he was “marvelous” against Marquez after a two-year layoff.

Arum’s fault

Mayweather also trashed Top Rank chief executive officer Bob Arum for harboring a vendetta against him and blocking a possible megafight with Pacquiao.

Arum used to promote Mayweather, but the two had a bitter falling out when Mayweather expressed his desire to take control of his career. Mayweather now promotes himself in partnership with Golden Boy Promotions.

Mayweather also denied that he has accused Pacquiao of steroid use.

Mayweather’s adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, announced recently that the boxer is aiming to put on a fight on May 5, 2012, and hinted that they may be targeting Pacquiao.

The boxer neither confirmed nor denied his intention to fight Pacquiao, only saying, “Win, lose or draw, whoever I fight still has to be tested with random blood and urine tests.”

Boxing observers believe that Mayweather may be more eager to pursue a fight with Pacquiao now, given the Filipino icon’s lackluster performance against Marquez.

Pacquiao, for his part, said he was ready to fight Mayweather. “Let’s get it on. Let’s make the fight happen,” Pacquiao said after his bout against Marquez.

A Pacquiao-Mayweather match may end up being the most lucrative fight in boxing history, but it remains to be seen if it will happen as Arum is seemingly intent on putting on a fourth match between Pacquiao and Marquez.
